PDK4 (PDHK4), along with the other PDHKs, regulates glucose metabolism by phosphorylating the E1 alpha subunit of the mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. Inhhibition of PDHKs is viewed as a potential therapeutic treament for type II diabetes.
