With ever increasing numbers of compounds and classes screened for and quantitated in environmental samples, the need for sensitive and efficient analytical instruments and methods continues to rise. In this seminar, hosted by Thermo Fisher Scientific at SETAC Europe, learn from experts about their approaches to evaluating some of the most challenging environmental compounds.
In the first part of our lecture Dr. Massimo Peruzzo of Eurolab demonstrates the use of LC-HR-MS/MS (Orbitrap Q-Exactive Focus) to overcome these challenges and eliminating the pre-concentration steps and using HRAM to enhance accuracy.
In the second part of the webinar, Dr. Davide Mariani, Head of Detergents and Surfactants at Innovhub-SSI, reviews automated surfactant extraction for analysis and quantitation. The extraction process covers matrices including textiles, polymers, and metal surfaces. Both the extraction challenges, as well as the anticipated analytical results, are explored. In addition to surfactants, recently, the analysis of Poly Fluorinated Compounds (PFC) has created multiple challenges for labs. Normally, the determination of PFC's is performed using sample pre-concentration via SPE followed by LC-MS/MS triple quad analysis. This approach is amenable to drinking or clean water samples. However, when analyzing waste water samples or sludge samples that contain solvents or high organic concentrations, SPE cartridges have difficulty retaining PFAS consisting of short chains (like PFBA and PFBS). Furthermore, in dirty samples, the low resolution of triple quad technique can result in false positives.

Dr. Massimo Peruzzo is Partner and CEO of Eurolab Srl. The laboratory is focused on environmental, food and precious metals analysis. They also specialize in the analysis of NORM and TENORM analysis. Particularly in the detection of activity of U235, U238 and Th232 with magnetic ICP-MS in the solid and liquid sample; the determination of concentration of total U and Th with ED-XRF. Eurolab Srl is the first laboratory, in Italy, accredited 17025 for the measurement of Isotopic Ratio, with double sector magnetic field ICP-MS, od U, Sr, Nd and Pb. Dr. Peruzzo has a degree in Chemistry from Padua University and MBA from CUOA Business School.
Dr. Davide Mariani, Head of Detergents and Surfactants, Innovhub-SSI
Dr. Davide Mariani graduated in chemistry at the University of Pavia. He has been head of the detergents and surfactants sector of Innovhub since 2003. The laboratory deals with products containing surfactants, and the major part is concerning the field of detergency, both from the analytical point of view, and from that of the performance evaluation of the formulations themselves. Together with the laboratory staff, he has implemented instrumental qualitative / quantitative techniques for the determination of surfactants also in environmental matrices.
Since the end of 2014, he had taken part in the work of CEN TC 276 WG3 on bio-surfactants as Italian delegate for UNI and Federchimica.
