Target Information

XLG2 encodes a plant-specific, noncanonical heterotrimeric G protein alpha-like factor that localizes dynamically to the nucleus and cell periphery, consistent with roles in both intracellular signaling and transcriptional control. The protein is structurally distinguished from canonical G alpha subunits by a large N-terminal extension (approximately 400 amino acids) that contains regulatory features including a functional nuclear localization signal, coupled to a C-terminal G alpha-like domain capable of nucleotide binding and hydrolysis. Biochemically, XLG2 binds and hydrolyzes GTP in a Ca2+-dependent manner (rather than the typical Mg2+ dependence of many metazoan G alpha proteins), supporting its classification as an unconventional GTPase. Functionally, XLG2 participates in defense signaling: it is induced during bacterial infection, contributes to pathogen resistance, and can act within an alternative G protein complex via interaction with the Arabidopsis G beta subunit, shaping downstream immune gene activation. In development, XLG2 can interact with the nuclear factor RTV1 and enhance its DNA-binding activity, thereby promoting transcription of floral integrator genes such as FT and SOC1 and influencing flowering time.
