VetMAX MastiType multiplex qPCR kits enable immediate and informed action

Because bovine mastitis can cause significant losses, farmers and herd managers need quick diagnostic results so they can take fast and appropriate action. Traditionally, culture has been used for the diagnosis of mastitis infections, but results can take a long time and pathogens can be difficult to grow, especially for Mycoplasma species.

Our multiplex qPCR and sample extraction solutions, the Applied Biosystems VetMAX MastiType multiplex qPCR kits, together with the Applied Biosystems MagMAX CORE Nucleic Acid Purification Kit, are designed to provide same-day results even for Mycoplasma spp., enabling farmers and veterinarians to take immediate and well-informed action.

Advantages:

  • Faster results—typical time from sample to result is 2.5–3 hours, compared to up to 10 days for a culture
  • No bacterial culture needed—detection independent of viable bacteria as PCR detects DNA
  • Detection of growth-inhibited pathogens—e.g., when treatment was already started
  • Detection of mastitis pathogens before mastitis is clinically apparent
  • Convenience—sample extraction does not require aspiration and centrifugation
  • Highly accurate—high sensitivity and specificity for all individual pathogens
  • Superior customer support—support from our experienced animal health service and support team
  • Leverage our experience—large portfolio of veterinary diagnostics

Bovine mastitis diagnosis

Bovine mastitis is the most common and costly disease among dairy cows. It is an inflammation of the mammary gland that is predominantly caused by a bacterial infection. When mastitis is identified in a cow’s quarter(s), it is important to identify the pathogen causing the infection because different categories of pathogens require different management strategies. Once the infection is identified, a dairy farmer can work with his or her veterinarian to target an effective treatment plan. Prudent use of antibiotics reduces the likelihood of resistant pathogens developing and can reduce the duration of treatment a cow may need, which in turn decreases operation costs.

Mastitis cost

Mastitis is estimated to cost the global dairy industry US $19.7 to US $32 billion annually.

With clinical mastitis, milk is typically visibly watery, thick or ropy, flakey, flocky, containing pus and blood or clots and often the quarter is red, swollen, and painful. A case of clinical mastitis may lead to an economic loss that ranges somewhere between US $128 (€105) and US $444 ( €360) (Rollin et al. 2015; Cha et al. 2011; Huijps et al. 2008)

Subclinical mastitis is not visibly notable when looking at the milk, and the udder appears normal. However, the somatic cell count of the cow’s milk is slightly elevated, and microorganisms can usually be detected in a diagnostic sample. The overall product loss of subclinical mastitis is estimated at US $110 per cow annually. The greatest economic losses are attributed to high bulk tank somatic cell count resulting in loss of quality premiums and overall lower milk production.

The cost of M. bovis in cattle due to mastitis is estimated at US $108 million annually with infection rates of up to 70% of a herd, for pneumonia and related respiratory illnesses at US $32 million annually. Total M. bovis estimated disease cost is at least US $140 million annually in the U.S. Even higher losses—estimated at €144 to €192 million—have been reported in Europe.
