Which Countess 3 automated cell counter is best for you?
Both Countess 3 models share common advantages, including:
- Accurate—highly accurate machine-learning algorithm applied to automated cell counting minimizes the subjectivity of manual cell counting and user-to-user variability helping increase reproducibility.
- Fast—counts live and dead cells, measures viability, reports average cell size, calculates percent cell aggregates, and saves data with a single touch in about 20 seconds.
- Convenient—requires no cleaning, routine maintenance, or calibration; high-resolution capacitive touchscreen and simple user interface enables quick startup with minimal training.
- Compliance—both models are compatible with optional SAE software, enabling 21 CFR Part 11 compliance.
The key difference is that the Countess 3 instrument counts in brightfield mode only while the Countess 3 FL instrument can count in either brightfield mode or brightfield and fluorescence mode using interchangeable EVOS LED light cubes (Table 1). Fluorescence capabilities with the Countess 3 FL instrument enable additional application options, and can extend your research beyond just GFP and RFP with 13 EVOS LED light cubes to choose from.

Countess 3 vs previous models
The Countess II and Countess II FL models were discontinued in 2020 with service and support ending in 2025. The Countess 3 and Countess 3 FL models boast a myriad of enhanced features designed to help streamline cell counting processes with exceptional accuracy and precision (Table 2).
