The Thermo Scientific Axia ChemiSEM System was designed to take the complexity out of microscopy and help you elevate your quantitative elemental analysis. Featuring a tungsten source and fully integrated energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) capabilities, it can help you conduct your research with minimal effort while the technology quietly collects your data in the background.
Its spacious chamber can accommodate samples weighing up to 10 kg (e.g., complete parts of gearboxes). Its user-friendly automated functions deliver always-ready imaging and minimal maintenance. And with just a two-minute wait to pump down the chamber, it makes sample loading up to twice as fast as average systems.
All of which makes the Axia ChemiSEM System an ideal choice for materials science applications like product failure investigation and contaminant identification where every aspect of the sample’s lifecycle needs to be analyzed in depth to determine its thickness, size, and precise elemental composition.
The Axia ChemiSEM System leverages Thermo Scientific ChemiSEM Technology, which integrates SEM and EDS analysis with advanced processing algorithms to streamline the collection, processing, and visualization of quantitative compositional information on your materials of interest. It eliminates most of the steps of conventional EDS workflows, greatly increasing the speed, ease of use, and completeness of SEM-EDS characterization.
A single scan generator controls SEM and EDS data acquisition, allowing for immediate data alignment and dwell times as low as 100 ns, which is well suited for high-throughput applications and beam-sensitive materials. In the resulting EDS maps, the elemental composition is quantified for every pixel of the image, and is easily accessible in the instrument’s user interface.
Additionally, the instrument has a high-weight-capacity sample stage that further increases the robustness and flexibility of the Axia ChemiSEM System.
The Axia ChemiSEM System has a range of features that facilitate its integration into materials characterization laboratories. This includes easy sample navigation with the Thermo Scientific Nav-Cam Camera, as well as automated alignment with SmartAlign Technology, which automatically maintains and manages electron column parameters. Smart User Guidance within the Axia ChemiSEM System’s software also provides a selection of step-by-step workflows that help you reach optimal imaging and analysis conditions for a number of common sample types and applications.
Additionally, the sample stage and holder design of the Axia ChemiSEM System are made to minimize the amount a sample needs to be modified for SEM-EDS analysis. A convenient door provides easy access to the entire sample chamber, and the holder can support samples weighing ≤10 kg, along with up to 7 sample stubs. Following sample loading, the chamber pumping system allows the beam to be turned on in less than two minutes.
Modern materials are often non-conductive, beam-sensitive, or both , which makes investigation with electron microscopy challenging. While coating with a conductive layer is a standard mitigation strategy, but these layers can obscure important details. The Axia ChemiSEM System enables several alternative methods for the analysis of sensitive samples, including a low-vacuum mode that enables charge-free imaging of non-conductive samples, as well as a beam-deceleration mode when the high-resolution of high-vacuum is more important.
