The Thermo Scientific HyPerforma Enhanced Single-Use Fermentor (e.S.U.F.) is helping to pioneer the single-use technology market by offering a rigorous solution for microbial fermentation applications while featuring the flexibility, ease of use, and efficiency found in single-use systems.

 

The e.S.U.F. is engineered for optimal oxygen mass transfer, mixing, and temperature control, with performance comparable to conventional stainless-steel systems. S.U.F.s use fundamental engineering principles, helping to make scale-up and process development work readily streamlined. Available in 30 L and 300 L sizes, the e.S.U.F. consists of a fermentor tank and a standard Thermo Scientific HyPerforma e.S.U.F. BioProcess Container (BPC).

Better mixing, oxygen uptake, and cooling performance

The HyPerforma e.S.U.F. features enhanced parabolic turbine impellers that deliver oxygen uptake comparable to or better than stainless steel fermentors. Additional features include:

  • Purpose-built fermentor design that can outperform modified bioreactors offered by our competition
  • Enhanced jacketing includes 35% more cooling surface area, offering sufficient cooling to handle high-density fermentations
  • An extensive library of application data includes both internal and customer-generated performance data

Features of eS.U.F. and standard S.U.F.

Developed with standard stainless-steel fermentation design geometry (3:1 height to diameter, 5:1 turndown ratio), the e.S.U.F. and standard S.U.F. support scale-up and process development activities.

Powerful agitation facilitates high oxygen transfer (kLa) and a homogeneous reaction

  • 3 Rushton impellers with standard S.U.F. or enhanced parabolic with eS.U.F.
  • Impellers couple directly to the shaft through a bearing to drive the motor
  • 4 baffles
  • Drilled-hole sparge (DHS) with ring-like design
  • Innovative exhaust management and condenser systems are designed to provide reliable off-gassing and help minimize liquid loss during the fermentation process

All S.U.F.s require a separate external temperature control unit and controller. You may choose an open-architecture approach or a turnkey, ready-to-use S.U.F. system.


Benefits of single-use fermentors

Enhanced HyPerforma Single-Use Fermentor Systems (eS.U.F.)

Enhancements to improve the performance of single-use fermentors were made to the 300 L hardware, as well as the 30 L and 300 L BPCs, to more closely match the oxygen delivery and cooling capacity performance of stainless steel fermentors.

Hardware enhancements

The cooling jacket surface area was increased on the sides and bottom for the 300 L S.U.F. to support adequate cooling of the production process. This 35% increase in jacketed surface area enables faster cooling and supports high-density cultures.

Fermentor BPCs are made with robust Thermo Scientific Aegis5-14 film, offering exceptional reliability and backed by decades of experience.
 

The Thermo Scientific BioTitan Retention Device is an innovative replacement for traditional cable ties that enhances the reliability and integrity of assemblies with a 360-degree seal.

Next-generation centrifuge-ready BPCs provide a single-use, sterilized, closed system for cell harvesting in bioprocessing.

BioProcessing Container (BPC) enhancements

The performance of the eS.U.F. system hinges on the BPC and its associated impellers. The BPC incorporates three advanced parabolic turbine impellers, specifically engineered to optimize mass transfer in fermentation processes. These impellers have demonstrated a fourfold increase in oxygen delivery compared to standard Ruston impellers. Additionally, the BPC features our trusted Aegis film and the BioTitan retention device, which, combined with decades of single-use experience, help ensure a reliable and robust BPC.


Automation software and controllers

The HyPerforma S.U.F. automation system integrates with the Thermo Scientific TruBio software, powered by the DeltaV Live Platform and the Thermo Scientific HyPerforma G3 bioprocess controllers to offer easy, unified data aggregation and quality control, helping to improve the user experience.
