The automated solution for complex carbohydrate analysis
Automatically generate eluent gradients to analyze complex carbohydrates by operating your Thermo Scientific Dionex ICS-6000 HPIC system in Dual Eluent Generation Cartridge (Dual EGC) mode. This novel option uses a methanesulfonic acid (MSA) EGC cartridge and a potassium hydroxide (KOH) EGC cartridge in series with each other to generate the extremely reproducible and accurate KOH/KMSA eluent gradient needed for analyzing complex carbohydrates such as oligosaccharides.
Dual EGC mode employs the powerful Thermo Scientific Dionex "Just Add Water" electrolytic eluent generation technology. Making manual eluent preparation unnecessary, electrolytic eluent generation is a key feature of our Reagent-Free Ion Chromatography (RFIC) systems equipped with Thermo Scientific Chromeleon CDS software.
To simplify the complex carbohydrate analysis solution, Thermo Scientific Dionex CarboPac PA200 IC columns for Dual EGC provide predictable, high-resolution, gradient separation of oligosaccharides. The Dionex CarboPac columns for Dual EGC mode are available in 1mm (standard/microbore) and 0.4mm (capillary) format.

Why use Dual EGC for carbohydrate/oligosaccharide analysis?
|Eliminates manual preparation of eluents||Reagent-free, electrolytic eluent generation eliminates the variation inherent to manual eluent preparation and related CO2 intrusion. Automatic eluent generation not only takes the manual labor out of ion chromatography, but it is also easy to adopt.|
|Improves IC reproducibility||Automated eluent generation ensures the generation of high-purity and accurate eluent concentrations, delivering consistent and reproducible retention time, and baseline stability. These benefits translate towards increased uptime and throughput.|
|Maximizes instrument uptime, minimizes maintenance||When using Dionex ICS-6000 RFIC-enabled systems, the only routine reagent needed is deionized water. Consequently, the instrument pump seals and pistons only come in contact with deionized water instead of acids and bases, which can precipitate. This extends the lifetime of pump seals and pistons, and significantly reduces overall pump maintenance, therefore minimizing the instrument downtime.|
|Offers eluent gradient capabilities||This extension of RFIC technology will now enable the analyst to run gradient methods using an isocratic pump. The analyst can now have the flexibility to modify or change the eluent concentrations anytime through the Thermo Scientific Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS).|
|Eliminates sodium acetate issues||Eluent generation eliminates the potential risk of system contamination due to the usage of lower quality sodium acetate required for analyzing complex carbohydrates using sodium hydroxide/sodium acetate gradients.|
Ion chromatography system configuration in Dual EGC mode
Dual EGC mode is available on the Dionex ICS-6000 HPIC system to support complex carbohydrate analysis. In Dual EGC mode, this RFIC-enabled system employs methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) EGC cartridges, in series, to electrolytically generate potassium hydroxide/potassium methanesulfonate (KOH/KMSA) eluents. This operating mode is applicable to both capillary (0.4mm) and analytical (1.0mm) column formats.
For analytical (1mm format) operation — The Thermo Scientific Dionex EGC 400 (KOH and MSA) Eluent Generator Cartridges are designed to enable operation at flow rates between 20µL/min–200µL/min. The Dionex EGC 400 MSA cartridge is connected in series to a Dionex EGC 400 KOH cartridge to generate KOH/KMSA eluents up to a total concentration of 200mM at flow rates of 20–63µL/min, and up to 63mM at flow rates up to 200µL/min.
For capillary (0.4mm format) operation — A Dionex EGC-MSA (Capillary) Eluent Generator Cartridge is connected in series to a Dionex EGC-KOH (Capillary) Eluent Generator Cartridge to generate KOH/KMSA eluents up to a total concentration of 200mM at flow rates of 1–10µL/min, and up to 100mM at flow rates up to 20µL/min.
