Since its commercial introduction in 2005, Orbitrap technology has become the recognized standard for achieving ultra-high resolution (>100,000) mass spectrometry with reliable accurate mass. Combined with superior dynamic range and unsurpassed sensitivity, Orbitrap-based platforms are the only LC-MS and MS/MS systems capable of providing all these benefits at the same time, and without compromise.

The Orbitrap mass analyzer can collect high sensitivity data with resolution ranging from 15,000 FWHM up to 500,000 FWHM at a scan rate of up to 22 Hz. The Orbitrap operates by radially trapping ions around a central spindle electrode after they are ejected from the C-Trap. Mass/charge (m/z) values are derived from the harmonic oscillation frequencies of the trapped ions as they move across the trap spindle. Ion frequencies are measured non-destructively and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) are used to obtain mass spectra.

The Orbitrap mass analyzer’s high-resolution, mass accuracy, and sensitivity are due to a number of technological advancements including tight integration with the ion injection process, numerous fragmentation options including ETD, and a segmented quadrupole mass filter. The newer Orbitrap Fusion Lumos also incorporates a brightest ion source and Advanced Vacuum Technology.

Which applications is Orbitrap technology suited for?

Due to its HRAM capabilities, the Orbitrap is often the mass analyzer of choice for elucidating novel, untargeted compounds at sub-ppb concentrations and/or sub-ppm mass differences. The Orbitrap is frequently used in research applications to elucidate low-abundance, high complexity, or otherwise difficult samples, including those collected in proteomics, lipidomics, clinical research and forensic toxicology, food and beverage, and environmental laboratories. This is because high resolving power can make the difference between detecting and not detecting low concentration analytes (due to the masking effect of isobaric interferences).
