Organism TypeHamsterCHO-Lec2 cells are mutants that have a 70–90% deficiency of sialic acid in their glycoproteins and gangliosides. Transport of CMP-sialic acid into the Golgi vesicles of these cells was 90% defective compared to vesicles from wild-type cells, whereas transport of other nucleotide sugars was normal. These cells do not have a defect in biosynthesis of CMP-sialic acid, asialoglycoproteins, and asialoglycosphingolipids, and they have normal levels of sialyltransferases.
